あしあと（Footprints)

One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scenes he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand;
one belonged to him, and the other to the Lord.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him,
he looked back at the footprints in the sand.
He noticed that many times along the path of his life
there was only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest
and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you,
you'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life
there was only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me."

The Lord replied, "my precious, precious child.
I love you and I would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering.
When you see only one set of footprint, it was then I carried you."

ある夜、私は夢を見た。
私は、主とともに、なぎさを歩いていた。
暗い夜空に、これまでの私の人生が映し出された。
どの光景にも、砂の上に二人のあしあとが残されていた。
一つは私のあしあと、もう一つは主のあしあとであった。

これまでの人生の最後の光景が映し出されたとき、
私は砂の上のあしあとに目を留めた。
そこには一つのあしあとしかなかった。
私の人生でいちばんつらく、悲しいときだった。

このことがいつも私の心を乱していたので、
私はその悩みについて主にお尋ねした。
「主よ。私があなたに従うと決心したとき、
あなたは、すべての道において私とともに歩み、
私と語り合ってくださると約束されました。
それなのに、私の人生の一番辛いとき、
一人のあしあとしかなかったのです。
一番あなたを必要としたときに、
あなたがなぜ私を捨てられたのか、私にはわかりません」

主はささやかれた。
私の大切な子よ。私はあなたを愛している。
あなたを決して捨てたりはしない。ましてや、苦しみや試みのときに。
あしあとが一つだったとき、私はあなたを背負って歩いていた。」

幾百万もの人々を感動させた「あしあと」という詩は、長い間、作者不明とされていました。ところが思いがけないところから作者が判明したのです。カナダに住むマーガレット・パワーズさんは、夫と娘が水難事故に巻き込まれ、自分も腕を折るという試練の時「この詩をお読みすれば、きっと励ましになると思うの」と看護婦さんが夫に読んでくれたという詩を開いて驚きました。なぜならそれは彼女が若い頃に作った「フット・プリント（あしあと）」という詩だったからです。
